Asheville’s premiere mountain community
I was looking for rolling land with a good view of the mountains in the distance, plenty of room, and not too far out of town.
Vision
Our mission at Thoms Estate is to create a quality residential neighborhood with an active yet relaxing lifestyle while preserving the natural beauty of North Asheville’s premier property.
At The Thoms Estate we believe in recreating outdoors and enjoying the best of Western North Carolina’s stunning natural surroundings. Featuring an open air pavilion and miles of walking or jogging trails, The Thoms Estate’s outdoor recreation scene is second to none. Whether it’s the sound of Beaver Creek rushing by or the cry of a hawk overhead, living at Thoms Estate is truly a nature rich experience—and located just minutes from downtown Asheville and Pack Square, the convenience and culture of city life is never far off.
The late Harold Thoms chose to rent for the first 15 years of his marriage because he had no interest in simply owning some house, somewhere. Instead, he held out for his dream, found land to match his aspirations, and founded the Estate where we take in fabulous views of the nearby mountains and enjoy pristine sunrise and sunset vistas in a wooded, mountain frame.
From Vision to Reality
In 2005 a local developer decided to turn this pristine land into Asheville’s premier community. The idea was to give people a way to appreciate and enjoy this jewel only minutes from downtown. The Thoms Estate is now under the guidance of Gated Communities of Asheville, LLC. With the support of Gated Communities of Asheville, LLC., we are realizing and sharing the vision started by Harold Thoms and bringing it to our residents.
Through a strong attention to detail coupled with a respect for Harold Thoms’ estate, we are creating a vibrant neighborhood in historic North Asheville with an active, relaxing community focused around the beauty and splendor preserved through today.
Harold Thoms
The late Harold Thoms chose to rent for the first 15 years of his marriage because he had no interest in simply owning some house, somewhere. Instead, he held out for his dream, found land to match his aspirations, and built a charming estate. Harold raised a cabin using trees he cleared from the dream house site. He built forms for the huge foundation of this dream house, and ran the bulldozer to build the dam to save the great maple that still stands on these grounds. Amazingly, Harold built this while also building an amazing communications empire—newspapers, radio stations and Asheville’s first cable TV system.
Harold Thoms is renowned for building a communications empire of newspapers, radio stations, and bringing Asheville its first cable TV system. He transformed the local rehabilitation hospital (now Thoms Rehabilitation Hospital) into a distinguished institution. He focused on good works, being a good neighbor and advocating for the City of Asheville.
Today, Harold Thoms’ estate is one of the last great locations in North Asheville. We invite you to come experience what he discovered so long ago.
